Oxfam CEO: Lebanon Humanitarian Crisis Requires Ceasefire That Is More Than 'On Paper Only'
Abby Maxman, President and CEO of Oxfam America, discussed the severe humanitarian crisis in Lebanon on Forbes Newsroom. The conflict between Israel and Hezbollah reignited after joint U.S.-Israel strikes on Iran earlier in 2026. A June ceasefire agreement was rejected by Hezbollah, and a subsequent U.S.-Iran memorandum of understanding has disintegrated, raising fears of renewed fighting. The Lebanese president is set to meet with President Trump in Washington to push for a stronger ceasefire and Israeli troop withdrawal from southern Lebanon. According to the UN, the conflict has killed over 3,500 people, injured thousands more, and displaced approximately 1 million people. Maxman emphasized that any ceasefire must be effectively implemented and not just a paper agreement to address the escalating humanitarian needs.
