Two in five Americans believe stock market only serves the top 1%
A new Harris Poll survey exclusive to the Guardian reveals that 40% of Americans believe the stock market only benefits the top 1%, and nearly 40% do not understand that the economy and stock market are distinct. Two-thirds incorrectly think a rising stock market indicates overall economic growth. Despite a resilient stock market (Dow up 9%, Nasdaq up 12.5% in 2026), economists describe a K-shaped recovery widening inequality. The top 1% own half of all stocks, while the bottom 50% own just 1%. Inflation cooled to 3.5% in June. The survey also found that half of Americans view the stock market as weak, and 60% see the economy as weak. Younger generations are investing earlier but also taking riskier bets, with 33% of respondents believing gambling offers better returns than the stock market.
