Pistorius at Isar Aerospace: Bundeswehr's Path to Space
German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius visited Isar Aerospace in Ottobrunn, where CEO Daniel Metzler stressed that modern armed forces depend on space-based reconnaissance, communication, and target acquisition. Both agreed the Bundeswehr must expand its sovereign satellite capabilities, citing the Ukraine war's demonstration of vulnerability when satellite services like Starlink are disrupted. Pistorius noted Germany is considering a Bundeswehr-owned launch site to diversify access to space, as current European options (Ariane, French Guiana) are limited and most German satellites rely on SpaceX's Falcon rockets. The visit follows a 35-billion-euro defense package announced in fall 2024, aimed at addressing Europe's lack of launch sites and vehicles. Rheinmetall is also building a satellite production facility in Germany.
