NASA Maps Reveal Nuanced Global Shifts in Nighttime Artificial Light
NASA researchers have released new maps based on nearly a decade of data from the Black Marble program, revealing complex patterns in Earth's nighttime artificial light usage between 2014 and 2022. Contrary to expectations of a uniform gradual increase in brightness, the study published in Nature shows a dynamic system where brightening and dimming coexist. Globally, nighttime radiance increased by 34%, but this was partially offset by an 18% dimming rate. In the United States, West Coast cities brightened due to population growth, while the East Coast saw dimming attributed to energy-efficient lighting and economic restructuring. Internationally, China and northern India experienced significant brightening linked to urban expansion. Conversely, Europe showed a trend toward dimming driven by energy conservation policies, with a sharp decline in 2022 following the energy crisis triggered by the war in Ukraine. These findings highlight how night light data reflects industrial activity, policy impacts, and ecological changes, offering a refined understanding of human alteration of the night environment.
