India Pursues Homegrown AI for Defense to Counter Global Threats

The Indian Ministry of Defence is actively engaging with domestic artificial intelligence firms, specifically SarvamAI and BharatGen, to develop indigenous AI systems for military applications. This strategic initiative is driven by lessons learned from recent conflicts in Iran and Ukraine, where AI proved decisive in operational decision-making and offensive capabilities. Officials aim to create an Indian equivalent of Palantir, emphasizing the need to decouple from foreign technology in critical defense sectors to ensure strategic autonomy. While acknowledging a technological lag compared to US models, the government believes domestic small models can effectively support surveillance, reconnaissance, and intelligence fusion. The move also responds to China's rapid integration of AI into its People’s Liberation Army operations, including autonomous drone swarms and intelligentized warfare systems. By investing in foundational domestic models, India seeks to reduce reliance on external sources and enhance its military's ability to process combat data rapidly, thereby strengthening national security against evolving global threats.
