PoliticsOne year after EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and US President Donald Trump signed the Turnberry Deal to resolve tariff disputes, the agreement is in jeopardy. Trump has threatened 'substantial' punitive tariffs on the EU in response to Brussels imposing an 890 million euro fine on Google. The European Parliament has warned of the deal's failure, with trade committee head Bernd Lange stating the EU must be prepared for all scenarios. The Turnberry Deal, signed at Trump's golf resort in Scotland, eliminated EU tariffs on US cars and industrial goods while maintaining a 15% US tariff on EU exports and requiring EU purchases of US liquefied gas. A new 10% US surcharge on EU goods, justified by alleged insufficient EU measures against forced labor, recently took effect. The EU Commission rejected the forced labor accusation but expressed relief that the 10% may be offset against the existing 15% tariff. However, additional US punitive tariffs could provoke a new trade war.
