China commenced two days of live-fire military drills on July 23, 2026, in the Taiwan Strait near Fujian province, around Dongshan Island. The exercises follow talks between U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, which included discussions on Taiwan, which China claims as its territory. The drills run from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily. This action echoes China's extensive war games in December 2025, which were a response to a record $11.1 billion U.S. arms package for Taiwan. Taiwan's government rejects China's sovereignty claim.

China commenced two days of live-fire drills on Thursday (July 23, 2026) in sections of the Taiwan Strait near the coast of its southeastern province of Fujian.
The exercises come one day after talks between U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, during which they discussed a range of issues, including democratically governed Taiwan — which China claims as its own territory.
According to a notice from maritime authorities, the drills will run daily from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. (2200 GMT to 1000 GMT) around Dongshan Island, which borders Guangdong province.
China previously conducted its most extensive war games encircling Taiwan in December, following the United States' announcement of a record $11.1 billion arms package for the island. Taiwan's government rejects China's sovereignty claim.
During those 10-hour live-fire exercises, China's Eastern Theatre Command launched rockets into waters north and south of Taiwan.
