China begins two days of live-fire drills in Taiwan Strait
China commenced two days of live-fire military drills on July 23, 2026, in the Taiwan Strait near Fujian province, around Dongshan Island. The exercises follow talks between U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, which included discussions on Taiwan, which China claims as its territory. The drills run from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily. This action echoes China's extensive war games in December 2025, which were a response to a record $11.1 billion U.S. arms package for Taiwan. Taiwan's government rejects China's sovereignty claim.
