Intel Foundry Lands Fortinet as First Named Customer for Next-Gen Security Chip

Intel announced on Tuesday that cybersecurity firm Fortinet will use its foundry services to produce the next-generation SP6 security chip, marking the first publicly named corporate customer under CEO Lip-Bu Tan, who took over in March 2025. The chip will be manufactured on Intel's older 4 process, not its most advanced 14A or 18A nodes. Intel is still seeking a marquee customer for its leading-edge technology to justify massive factory investments. While Intel has previously announced partnerships with Microsoft, Amazon, Google, Tesla, and SpaceX, and an unconfirmed Apple deal, Fortinet represents a tangible win in the cybersecurity space. The U.S. government holds a 10% stake in Intel, and the company's stock has surged over 300% in the past year. Intel is set to report second-quarter results on Thursday.
