Vessel Seized Off UAE's Fujairah and Heading Toward Iranian Waters

A vessel was boarded by unauthorized personnel while anchored northeast of the United Arab Emirates port of Fujairah on Thursday, May 14, according to the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO). The ship, identified by maritime security sources as the Honduras-flagged Hui Chuan fishery research vessel, is currently heading toward Iranian territorial waters. The incident occurred approximately 38 nautical miles northeast of Fujairah. British maritime risk management group Vanguard reported that contact with the vessel was lost after it ceased transmitting its position via the Automated Identification System (AIS). The vessel's operator, SG Navigation, could not be reached for comment. This seizure occurs amidst ongoing tensions, with reports indicating that at least two other vessels have been seized by Iran since the conflict began following U.S. and Israeli strikes on February 28. Tracking data showed the vessel was last seen within Iran's exclusive economic zone in the Gulf of Oman on May 12. The event highlights escalating maritime security risks in the region, raising concerns about freedom of navigation and potential further geopolitical escalation between Iran and Western-aligned nations.
