Study Reveals Partisan Alignment and Disinformation Drive Pro-Russian Sentiment in Europe

A recent study analyzing data from nearly 30,000 respondents across 18 European countries investigates the drivers behind pro-Russian attitudes following the 2022 invasion of Ukraine. While most Europeans support Ukraine, significant segments remain ambivalent or pro-Kremlin. The research identifies partisan alignment as the strongest predictor of pro-Russian views, indicating that supporters often mirror their preferred political party's rhetoric rather than acting on independent ideological or economic motives. Exposure to disinformation and conspiracy theories, particularly via social media, is the second-strongest correlate, with believers being significantly less likely to support Ukraine. Ideological factors like cultural conservatism play a weaker role, while economic interests, such as energy costs, show little to no effect on public opinion. The authors argue that countering Russian influence requires robust moderation of public discourse and combating disinformation. However, these efforts are hindered by domestic political incentives, as seen in countries like Slovakia and the Czech Republic, where leaders either amplify pro-Kremlin narratives or reject anti-disinformation measures, highlighting the critical role of political leadership in maintaining information integrity.
