EU States Including Germany Block New Russia Sanctions Package
Despite the removal of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán's veto power, the European Union is facing unexpected internal divisions over the 21st sanctions package against Russia. According to Politico, numerous member states including Germany are openly opposing key measures. Greece is blocking a ban on EU companies transporting Russian liquefied natural gas to third countries, citing concerns for its shipping industry. Austria has intervened on behalf of Raiffeisen Bank International, demanding compensation for expropriated assets in Russia. Plans to ban imports of Russian cod, haddock, and pollock were dropped after objections from several governments warning of higher consumer prices. The sanctions require unanimous approval from all 27 member states, allowing any single country to halt the entire package. Finnish MEP Ville Niinistö expressed disappointment at the delays, noting that without Orbán's cover, other states must now openly state their objections.
