Pentagon Suspends Deployment of Over 4,000 US Soldiers to Europe

The US Department of Defense has suspended the planned deployment of more than 4,000 soldiers from the 2nd Armored Brigade of the 1st Cavalry Division to Europe. This decision, reported by American media including the Wall Street Journal, surprised several military officials in Washington, as some personnel and equipment were already en route to Poland for a nine-month rotation mission. The troops were intended to support NATO allies under Operation Atlantic Resolve, a initiative launched in 2014 following Russia's annexation of Crimea. Although US European Command (EUCOM) had previously recommended against replacing these forces after their mission ended, they had not insisted on an immediate cancellation. This suspension occurs shortly after US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth ordered the withdrawal of 5,000 American troops from Germany. Meanwhile, Polish President Karol Nawrocki reaffirmed Poland's willingness to host additional US forces, noting that nearly 10,000 American soldiers are currently stationed in the country through periodic rotations. The move signals a potential shift in US military posture in Eastern Europe amidst ongoing geopolitical tensions.
