Pentagon Signs Framework Agreements for Over 10,000 Containerized Missiles

The Pentagon has announced framework agreements with defense firms Anduril, CoAspire, Leidos, and Zone 5 to potentially acquire over 10,000 low-cost, containerized missiles under the new Low-Cost Containerized Munitions (LCCM) program. Starting in 2027, this three-year initiative aims to provide affordable mass firepower for U.S. warfighters. The assessment phase begins in June 2026 with test missile purchases from all four companies, establishing terms for future firm-fixed-price production contracts. Additionally, a separate agreement with startup Castelion outlines a plan for a two-year contract to purchase a minimum of 500 Blackbeard hypersonic missiles annually, pending successful testing. The Pentagon seeks authorization to buy over 12,000 Blackbeard missiles over five years. Officials stated these moves expand the industrial base beyond traditional prime contractors and signal long-term demand for innovative entrants. This procurement ramp-up occurs amidst high munitions demand due to the ongoing war in Iran, with the fiscal 2027 budget proposing over $26 billion for critical munitions procurement.
