Pentagon Signs AI Deals with Eight Major Vendors, Excluding Anthropic

The U.S. Department of Defense has finalized agreements with eight major technology vendors, including SpaceX, OpenAI, Google, Nvidia, Reflection, Microsoft, AWS, and Oracle, to integrate their artificial intelligence tools into classified military networks. These contracts allow the use of AI models on Impact Level 6 and 7 systems, which handle secret and top-secret data, aiming to establish the U.S. military as an AI-first fighting force. Notably absent from the list is Anthropic, following a significant political dispute with the Trump administration. The exclusion stems from Anthropic's refusal to relax safety guardrails regarding autonomous weapons and surveillance, leading President Donald Trump to ban its technology across federal agencies. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth criticized the company for attempting to strong-arm the military, while Anthropic has sued the administration for labeling it a supply chain risk. The Pentagon emphasized that these partnerships will enhance decision superiority and situational understanding for warfighters. Additionally, the department reported that over 1.3 million personnel have utilized its official GenAI.mil platform, highlighting the growing reliance on AI within defense operations while maintaining a strategy to prevent vendor lock-in.
