NATO Standing Maritime Group One Arrives on the Clyde
Warships from NATO's Standing Maritime Group One (SNMG1) have arrived on the River Clyde in Glasgow, Scotland. The Canadian frigate HMCS Ville de Québec, currently the flagship of the group, berthed at King George V Dock alongside the Norwegian frigate HNoMS Fridtjof Nansen. The German fleet tanker FGS Rhön arrived a day earlier. The Ville de Québec assumed flagship duties from the German frigate FGS Sachsen during a port visit to Halifax, Nova Scotia earlier in July. The frigate is operating under Operation Reassurance, Canada's contribution to NATO deterrence in Europe, and is scheduled to operate in the North Atlantic, North Sea, and Baltic Sea until December. SNMG1 is one of NATO's four standing naval forces, held at readiness to provide persistent maritime presence and respond to emerging threats. The group also includes the Dutch frigate HNLMS Van Amstel, combat support ship HNLMS Den Helder, the Turkish frigate TCG Oruçreis, and FGS Sachsen.
