A recent study published in Nature, utilizing NASA’s Black Marble data from VIIRS sensors on Suomi-NPP and NOAA satellites, analyzes changes in artificial nighttime light between 2014 and 2022. The research reveals a complex pattern of brightening and dimming rather than a uniform global increase. While global radiance rose by 34 percent overall, significant regional variations occurred. Brightening was observed in China, northern India, and U.S. West Coast cities, driven by urban development and population growth. Conversely, dimming occurred in parts of the U.S. East Coast and several European nations, including France, the UK, and the Netherlands, attributed to energy-efficient LED adoption and conservation policies.
