NASA Graphic Reveals Uneven Global Light Trends from 2014 to 2022
NASA’s Black Marble project has released new detailed maps tracking changes in artificial light across the most populated regions of Earth between 2014 and 2022. By combining data from three satellites and correcting for atmospheric and terrain factors, the agency created visualizations that reveal significant shifts in human activity. A recent study published in Nature indicates that while global radiance increased by approximately 34 percent during this period, the changes were geographically uneven. Rapid urban development in China and India led to considerable brightening in these areas. Conversely, parts of the United States East Coast and much of Europe experienced dimming. This reduction is attributed to energy conservation efforts, such as the widespread adoption of LED bulbs, and the impact of the European energy crisis following the Russo-Ukrainian war, which notably darkened lights in 2022. These graphics provide a nuanced view of global development, energy usage, and geopolitical impacts on nighttime luminosity.
