LNG Market to Rebound After 2026 Setback but Faces Long-Term Uncertainty Through 2050
The global LNG market, which hit a record 437 million tonnes in 2025, faces a temporary setback in 2026 due to Strait of Hormuz blockades and war damage to Qatar's Ras Laffan site, reducing supply by 13 million tpy for 3-5 years. US LNG exports are projected to reach 120 million tpy in 2026, generating over $60 billion in annual revenue and $8.2 billion in government taxes. However, long-term demand through 2050 is uncertain as cheaper Chinese solar and battery storage hybrids are expected to outcompete LNG in Asian markets by 2030, potentially reducing US LNG export demand. Shell forecasts 65% demand growth to 700 million tpy by 2050, while IGU predicts the same capacity by 2030.
