Lebanon Seeks Full Ceasefire Extension Amid Continued Israeli Strikes

Lebanon and Israel engaged in a third round of high-level negotiations in Washington, aiming to secure a comprehensive and final ceasefire extension. Despite diplomatic efforts led by the US, violence on the ground has intensified, with continued Israeli airstrikes in southern and eastern Lebanon and fresh evacuation orders issued for civilians. Hezbollah clashes resulted in the death of an Israeli soldier, while the group launched rocket and missile attacks against Israeli forces. Lebanese officials, including Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri, emphasized that a genuine halt to hostilities is prerequisite for successful talks, demanding full Israeli withdrawal, prisoner releases, and the return of displaced residents. Israel maintains its military operations are necessary to neutralize threats from Hezbollah, refusing full withdrawal while the group remains armed. Since the initial truce began on April 17, monitoring bodies have recorded thousands of ceasefire violations, and over 380 people have been killed in Lebanon. The US State Department advocates for direct communication as the best path to lasting security, accusing Hezbollah of obstructing peace efforts through ongoing attacks.
