Iran Awaits World Cup Visas Amid Diplomatic Tensions

The Iranian Football Federation (FFIRI) has announced that its national team players have not yet received visas for the upcoming FIFA World Cup in the United States, despite the tournament starting in less than a month. FFIRI President Mehdi Taj stated that no visas have been issued and demanded guarantees from FIFA during an imminent decisive meeting. The uncertainty stems from geopolitical tensions, specifically regarding links between Iranian officials and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). While FIFA President Gianni Infantino confirmed Iran's participation, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio indicated that individuals with IRGC connections could face entry restrictions. This follows an incident where Iranian delegates were denied entry to Canada for a FIFA congress due to visa cancellations linked to the IRGC. Consequently, the FFIRI has submitted ten conditions for participation, including visa assurances for those who completed military service with the IRGC. Iran is scheduled to play matches against New Zealand, Belgium, and Egypt in Los Angeles and Seattle, with the team based in Tucson, Arizona. The situation highlights the intersection of international sports and diplomatic sanctions.
