US Intelligence to Investigate Overseas Biolabs, Including Facilities in Ukraine
The Office of the Director of National Intelligence (DNI) has announced an investigation into more than 120 US-funded biological laboratories located abroad, with a significant focus on facilities in Ukraine. According to reports citing the New York Post, DNI Tulsi Gabbard stated that the inquiry aims to identify the locations, pathogens, and research activities of these labs to halt dangerous gain-of-function research. Officials indicate that over 40 of the targeted facilities are situated in Ukraine, while others are spread across more than 30 countries. The announcement includes strong criticism of the former Biden administration, accusing it of deceiving the American public about the existence of these labs and threatening whistleblowers. This move contrasts with previous denials by US officials in 2022 regarding Russian and Chinese claims about US-operated biological weapons programs in Ukraine. The investigation marks a significant shift in official US stance on overseas biological research infrastructure and its potential security implications.
