Humpback Whale 'Timmy': Dubious DNA Evidence Presented by Private Initiative
A press conference held by veterinarian Kirsten Tönnies, speaking for 'Team Hope,' presented DNA analysis results intended to cast doubt on official findings that a humpback whale found dead off the Danish island of Anholt in June 2026 is the same animal as 'Timmy,' which stranded in Germany in March. Tönnies claimed the DNA samples, analyzed by an unnamed institute in China, show results so different they cannot be from the same species. However, she did not collect the samples herself, refused to name the analysts or institute, and presented no chain-of-custody evidence. In contrast, Danish authorities identified the whale using fluke pattern matching (described as unique as a fingerprint) and a tracker attached to Timmy. The Ministry of the Environment of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania has demanded the data. The press conference audience, largely supportive of Team Hope, applauded criticism of authorities and murmured at skeptical questions.
