German Foreign Minister Wadephul Sees Finland's Preparations for Conflict with Russia
German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul visited Finland to observe the country's extensive preparations for a potential conflict with Russia. At the closed Vaalimaa border crossing, he saw the fortified 1,400-kilometer border, which Finland shut to passenger traffic in late 2023 due to Russian hybrid attacks involving instrumentalized migrants. Finnish Foreign Minister Elina Valtonen explained that Moscow continues to pose a threat. Wadephul was briefed on Russian military reorganizations, cyberattacks, drone overflights, election interference, and attacks on Baltic Sea infrastructure. The Finnish coast guard demonstrated the interception of a Russian shadow fleet vessel. Wadephul noted that assessments of when Russia might provoke a NATO state vary, with Poland warning of critical months ahead and the Bundeswehr estimating Russia could wage a large-scale war by 2029.
