Australia Transfers 49 M1A1 Abrams Tanks to Ukraine Despite US Concerns
Australia completed the transfer of 49 retired M1A1 Abrams tanks to Ukraine in December 2025, a A$245 million donation made after a direct request from Kyiv. While Washington approved the transfer, US officials privately expressed frustration, warning that the tanks would be difficult for Ukraine to sustain on a drone-saturated battlefield. The US had already seen its own 31 M1A1s struggle in Ukraine, with five lost and the rest temporarily pulled from the front due to Russian drone threats. The donation includes not just tanks but a logistics system of recovery vehicles, transporters, and fuel trucks. Ukraine has since modified the tanks with mesh and cages before fielding them. Australia was retiring the M1A1s as it transitions to M1A2 SEPv3 tanks, making the donation strategically sensible for Canberra despite US reservations.
