PoliticsA federal judge, Brian E. Murphy, lifted the last remaining block on the Trump administration's termination of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Ethiopians, placing approximately 5,000 Ethiopian immigrants at risk of deportation within 60 days. The decision follows a June Supreme Court ruling that federal courts cannot review TPS decisions by the Department of Homeland Security. Ethiopians originally received TPS in 2022 during the Tigray war. The case is expected to continue as plaintiffs argue the decision was motivated by racial animus. This action is part of a broader pattern, as the administration also ended TPS for Haitians earlier in August, affecting over 300,000 people. TPS protections have now been revoked for immigrants from Ethiopia, Haiti, South Sudan, Burma, Somalia, Cameroon, Syria, Yemen, Venezuela, Nicaragua, Nepal, and Honduras.
