PoliticsA federal judge has allowed the Trump administration to terminate Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Ethiopians, placing approximately 5,000 immigrants at risk of deportation within 60 days. The decision by U.S. District Court Judge Brian E. Murphy lifts the last remaining legal block, following a June Supreme Court ruling that federal courts cannot review TPS decisions made by the Department of Homeland Security. Ethiopians originally received TPS in 2022 during the Tigray war. The case is expected to continue as plaintiffs attempt to prove the decision was motivated by racial or national origin animus. This action follows the termination of TPS for Haitians earlier in August 2026, affecting over 300,000 people. The Trump administration has now revoked TPS protections for immigrants from 12 countries, including Ethiopia, Haiti, South Sudan, Burma, Somalia, Cameroon, Syria, Yemen, Venezuela, Nicaragua, Nepal, and Honduras.
