PoliticsGermany, Norway, Canada, and Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems (TKMS) have officially started the planning phase for the multinational 212CD submarine program. The first joint planning event took place in Kiel, Germany, at the end of July, bringing together officials from the three navies and partner companies Kongsberg and Multiconsult. This follows Canada's selection of TKMS as the preferred supplier for its Canadian Patrol Submarine Project (CPSP), which aims to replace the Victoria-class submarines with up to 12 new 212CD-based vessels. The 212CD is a non-nuclear submarine derived from the 212A class, featuring an enlarged diamond-shaped hull for reduced acoustic signature, diesel-electric propulsion with hydrogen fuel cell air-independent technology, and armament including NSM anti-ship missiles and heavyweight torpedoes. The program will now proceed with further negotiations to formalize agreements among the partners.
