TechAn Nvidia employee has been detained in Taiwan on suspicion of forgery and breach of trust related to the Supermicro smuggling scandal, where servers sold to Southeast Asian companies were rerouted to China in violation of U.S. export controls. Authorities searched the employee's home and workplace on July 24, marking the first time Nvidia premises have been investigated in this case. Nvidia itself is not under investigation but has implemented a whitelist for buyers and sent staff to customer data centers to verify compliance. The scandal has widened to include employees from Supermicro, distributor Albatron Technology, and data center operator Chief Telecom. Taiwan is considering a criminal ban on AI chip exports to China. Despite the scandal, demand for Nvidia hardware remains intense as the AI race accelerates.
