Ukrainian Air Force F-16 fighter jet crashes, pilot ejects safely

On 29 July 2026, a Ukrainian Air Force F-16 fighter jet crashed while performing a combat mission to intercept enemy air targets. Communication with the aircraft was lost, and an emergency situation occurred on board, forcing the pilot to eject. The pilot was successfully evacuated and is reported to be completely safe. The cause of the incident is under investigation. Ukraine currently operates around 50 older-generation, modernized F-16s delivered by the Netherlands, Denmark, and Norway. These jets are primarily used for intercepting drones and cruise missiles, as well as striking ground targets. Notably, on 8 July 2026, a Ukrainian F-16 achieved its first confirmed shoot-down of a Russian Su-35 fighter, a loss also acknowledged by Russian sources.
