Six U.S. lawmakers buy SpaceX stock after IPO, raising ethics questions

According to recently disclosed financial transactions, six members of the U.S. Congress have purchased stock in Elon Musk's SpaceX following its June 2026 initial public offering. The purchases include five Republicans and one Democrat, Rep. Gilbert Cisneros of California. The first purchase was made by Rep. Lisa McClain's husband, who bought xAI stock before it was folded into SpaceX. Other buyers include Reps. John James, Daniel Meuser, William Timmons, and John McGuire. Several of these lawmakers serve on committees that oversee SpaceX's military contracts or related issues, raising potential conflicts of interest. The total investments range from $182,000 to $480,000. SpaceX stock has since declined, meaning the lawmakers' holdings are currently underwater. Lawmakers' offices distanced themselves from the trades, with some stating they are managed by outside advisers.
