Manuel Wiederer, a 29-year-old German ice hockey forward for the Eisbären Berlin, narrowly escaped devastating forest fires in the Bordeaux region of southwestern France during a vacation. The fires have burned 42,000 hectares and prompted a state of emergency. Wiederer, who was in the affected area for only a few days, considers himself lucky to have left before the worst. Now back in Berlin, he is voluntarily training hard for the upcoming season, including three days on ice and weight room sessions. He also revealed he received custom-made skates from equipment manager Dirk Perschau, which he plans to debut when the season starts, aiming for a successful campaign with many goals.

Forward Manuel Wiederer (29) can hardly wait for the Eisbären's training camp to start in early August. He's already training diligently — voluntarily. Following the motto: Good winter athletes are made in summer.
And it was a tough one for the German champion's penalty-kill specialist. Wiederer first vacationed in Berlin and his home region of Bavaria. Then he traveled to France.
Wiederer: "I was only there for a few days. I was lucky. It was the region where the fire is raging today."
Due to devastating forest fires, a state of emergency is in effect in southwestern France. In the Bordeaux region alone, 42,000 hectares of land have been devastated by the fires. There is no end to the catastrophe in sight.

The defensive forward is now back in Berlin and focusing on the upcoming season.
Wiederer: "Three days a week I go on the ice for training. On the remaining days, I sweat it out in the weight room."
The ice at the Wellblechpalast has already melted. Therefore, the voluntary training takes place at the ice rink on Paul-Heyse-Straße.
Eisbär Wiederer Gets New Skates for Success
The native of Deggendorf in Bavaria then reveals a sporting secret: For success with the Eisbären in the new season, he has received new skates. Equipment manager Dirk Perschau obtained the custom-made gear from the sports equipment manufacturer "Bauer."
Wiederer: "I still have my old skates. But when the season starts, I'll put on the new ones."
For success with many Wiederer goals.
