Blue Origin, Jeff Bezos' space company, raised $10 billion in its first-ever outside funding round, valuing the company at $130 billion. Bezos contributed $2 billion as part of the round, while hedge fund Coatue Management invested $4 billion, with other major investors splitting the remainder. Bezos' stake will drop from 100% to about 94%. The company needs the cash for multiple capital-intensive projects: rebuilding its Cape Canaveral launch pad after a New Glenn rocket explosion in May 2026, investigating the cause, replacing the rocket, building more rockets for a planned 100 flights per year, developing a 5,408-satellite broadband constellation (TeraWave), building lunar landing ships for NASA's Artemis program, and helping construct an Orbital Reef space station. Analysts estimate Blue Origin will spend $4.8 billion on capital investment in 2026 alone. The article notes the company has no reported profit and annual revenue estimated at only $26.4 million, questioning the investment rationale.

Since stepping down as CEO of Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN) in 2021, Jeff Bezos has devoted himself fully to making his other company—space venture Blue Origin—a success. He has poured approximately $30 billion into the effort.
And it still isn't enough.
Blue Origin Seeks Outside Cash
Through May 2026, Bezos' personal contributions to Blue Origin totaled roughly $28 billion, averaging about $1 billion per year. Last month, Bezos confirmed he would double that annual contribution in 2026, investing $2 billion in Blue Origin as part of a reported $10 billion financing round.
This marks the first time Blue Origin has ever sought outside, non-Bezos investment since the company was founded 26 years ago.
According to CNBC, participants in this inaugural funding round include:
- Jeff Bezos (continuing his investment)
- Coatue Management — contributing $4 billion
- Several other "major investors"
All investors are participating at a $130 billion valuation for the entire company. Bezos' ownership stake is expected to shrink from 100% to approximately 94%, while Coatue takes a roughly 3% stake and remaining investors split another 3%.
Why Blue Origin Needs the Money
Despite its $130 billion valuation, Blue Origin requires liquid cash to fund multiple ongoing projects. Analysts forecast the company will spend $4.8 billion on capital investment this year alone, including:
- Rebuilding its Cape Canaveral launch pad (destroyed when a New Glenn rocket exploded during engine testing in May)
- Investigating the cause of the explosion
- Replacing the destroyed rocket
- Building additional rockets to support an eventual launch cadence of 100 flights per year
Beyond launch infrastructure, Blue Origin is simultaneously pursuing:
- A constellation of 5,408 TeraWave broadband internet satellites — projected to cost $10 billion or more
- Development of lunar landing ships for NASA's Project Artemis
- Construction of the Orbital Reef space station in low-Earth orbit
Given the billions in new spending required, it is understandable that Blue Origin would seek outside funding. An IPO is also a possibility, given the company's financial needs.
Investment Considerations
Whether investors should participate in a potential Blue Origin IPO at a $130 billion valuation is another question entirely. According to S&P Global Market Intelligence, the company currently reports:
- No profit
- Estimated annual revenue of only $26.4 million
