On July 26, 2026, Russian and Ukrainian strikes killed at least 10 people, escalating a conflict that has seen mounting civilian casualties. Ukraine reported that a Russian drone strike hit a supermarket in the northern city of Chernigiv, killing two people including a 10-year-old child and wounding 13. President Zelenskyy condemned the attack as 'deliberate Russian terror.' Russia also launched ballistic missiles at Kyiv, wounding several, and struck residential buildings in Zaporizhzhia and Kharkiv, killing two more. In response, Ukrainian drone strikes killed four people at a bus stop in Russian-occupied Gorlivka and one in the occupied Kherson region. A Ukrainian drone also killed one person in Russia's Belgorod region. The attacks came a day after 20 people were killed on both sides of the frontline. Diplomacy to end the war, which began with Russia's 2022 invasion, remains at a deadlock, with the Kremlin continuing to occupy parts of eastern and southern Ukraine.

Russian and Ukrainian strikes killed at least 10 people on Sunday (July 26, 2026), with Kyiv reporting that Moscow attacked a supermarket in northern Ukraine and Russia accusing Kyiv of striking a bus stop in the occupied east.
The attacks come a day after 20 people were killed on both sides of the frontline, as both Kyiv and Moscow intensify strikes while diplomacy to end the war — launched by Russia in 2022 — remains at a deadlock.
Strike on Chernigiv Supermarket
Kyiv said Moscow struck a supermarket in the northern city of Chernigiv.
"As a result of the strike, two people were killed, including a 10-year-old child," said Dmytro Bryzhynsky, head of the city, on social media.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said 13 people were wounded in what he called a "deeply cynical drone strike on an ordinary supermarket."
Officials published a photograph showing smoke billowing from a supermarket building in Chernigiv, which lies close to Belarus and far from the frontline.
Other Ukrainian Casualties
Mr. Zelenskyy also reported that Russia had launched ballistic missiles at Kyiv, wounding several people, and that Moscow's strikes killed:
- One person in Zaporizhzhia
- One person in Kharkiv, where officials said a residential building was targeted
"This is deliberate Russian terror with absolutely no military justification," Mr. Zelenskyy said.
Strikes in Russian-Occupied Areas
In Moscow-held Gorlivka, Russian-installed local authorities said a Ukrainian drone strike killed four people. The strike reportedly hit a bus stop, leaving seven others wounded.
Moscow also reported that another person was killed in the occupied part of the Kherson region.
In Russia's border Belgorod region, authorities said one person was killed by a Ukrainian drone in the village of Smorodino.
Context
The attacks came a day after Moscow said a Ukrainian strike on an occupied town on the Azov Sea killed 12 people.
U.S.-led talks on ending the fighting have stalled. The Kremlin currently occupies swathes of eastern and southern Ukraine and has repeatedly stated its intention to seize the rest of eastern Ukraine by force.
