The Trump Administration, through the Department of Energy's Genesis Mission, has unveiled Project Prometheus, a $60 million AI-driven nuclear development initiative. Major partners include Nvidia, Amazon Web Services, and Microsoft, alongside nuclear companies X-Energy, Oklo, and Standard Nuclear. The project involves four national laboratories and several research universities. Notably, NuScale Power was not selected. The initiative aims to accelerate licensing, manufacturing, and operation of advanced nuclear reactors, including small modular reactors (SMRs) and TRISO fuel technologies.

It was a significant day for nuclear power in the U.S. as the Trump Administration unveiled the recipients of 278 research projects funded through the Department of Energy's (DoE) Genesis Mission on Wednesday.
The Prometheus project — which leverages artificial intelligence (AI) for nuclear development — was a major winner, receiving a Phase II award of $60 million over three years. It represents one of the largest investments in cutting-edge nuclear technologies in decades.
Key Partners in Project Prometheus
The major partners include four of the DoE's 17 National Laboratories:
- Idaho National Laboratory
- Oak Ridge National Laboratory
- Argonne National Laboratory
- Sandia National Laboratories
Major research universities, including North Carolina State University and Penn State University, are also involved.
The Heavyweights
The two companies leading the initiative alongside the Idaho National Laboratory are:
- Nvidia (NASDAQ: NVDA)
- Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN) — via Amazon Web Services (AWS)
AI hyperscaler Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT) is also a partner.
Nuclear Companies Selected for Participation
X-Energy (NASDAQ: XE)
- Signed on as a Tier 1 partner with board of directors representation
- Committed $10 million in financial support
- Will contribute its Xe-100 high-temperature, gas-cooled small modular reactor (SMR)
- Will provide TRISO-X particle fuel designs and other design and fabrication data
- Believes participation will "accelerate licensing, manufacturing, construction, and operation across a growing commercial project portfolio"
Oklo (NYSE: OKLO)
- Focused on designing and building a sodium-cooled fast reactor SMR called the Aurora Powerhouse
- Working on a strategic partnership project to integrate the Prometheus AI platform into its Multiphysics design and analysis infrastructure
- Integration expected to streamline engineering workflows and support development of Pluto, Oklo's reactor system designed for plutonium fuels
Standard Nuclear (NYSE: STDN)
- A start-up nuclear fuel company
- Advertises itself as "the only U.S. company with industrial-scale TRISO manufacturing facilities to date"
Other Nonpublic Participants
- TerraPower
- Westinghouse Electric
- Aalo Atomics
Note: This Prometheus AI project is unrelated to the "Prometheus AI supercluster," a computing system that Meta Platforms (NASDAQ: META) is building in Ohio in partnership with other entities.
