Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov criticized US Secretary of State Marco Rubio for describing the 2025 Alaska summit between Putin and Trump as a failure, accusing Washington of deviating from agreed compromise positions. Speaking on the sidelines of a summit in Kyrgyzstan, Lavrov reiterated Moscow's determination to achieve its war goals in Ukraine, with or without a diplomatic solution. He noted that Ukraine rejected Russian proposals due to continued US weapons support. The article also reports that Ukraine launched a large-scale drone attack on Russia, targeting the Wildberries online retailer near St. Petersburg, injuring three people. Meanwhile, Kyiv faced Russian attacks overnight, with air defense systems active. The Alaska summit's concrete results were never made public, and Putin has not softened his demands, including claims to Ukrainian territories not under Russian control.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov met in Manila for talks on the Ukraine war. Christoph Wanner reports on the meeting.
Russia's Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has accused the United States of deviating from agreements made at the Alaska summit, while emphasizing that Moscow will achieve its war goals regardless of Washington's course.
Lavrov: Moscow Will Achieve Goals "Under All Circumstances"
Speaking on the sidelines of a summit in Central Asian Kyrgyzstan, Lavrov stated that Washington has apparently changed its stance regarding the agreements reached between Kremlin chief Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump in Alaska.
"Of course, we have said many times that we would prefer a diplomatic solution, but we will achieve our goals under all circumstances," Lavrov said.
The Russian top diplomat was responding to comments from his US counterpart Marco Rubio, who described the 2025 summit in Anchorage between Trump and Putin as a failure and called for new paths to a diplomatic solution. Both politicians had met just the day before on the sidelines of the ASEAN summit in Manila.
According to Lavrov, Ukraine rejected Russian proposals, in part because it could count on continued US weapons aid.
"Who Exactly Failed?"
"Regarding the failure of the Anchorage agreements, we probably need to be clear about who exactly failed," the Russian news agency TASS quoted Lavrov as saying.
He recalled that the summit in Anchorage had led to coordinated compromise positions:
"If there is a proposal, there is also an agreement – were there perhaps results agreed upon in Anchorage? Yes, there were. US President Donald Trump – I am not revealing any secrets here – has repeatedly stated that it was a compromise proposal."
No Public Results from Alaska Summit
Concrete results from the Alaska summit last year were not made public. Trump, however, praised the meeting as a great success and compromise. Putin subsequently did not back down from any of his demands for ending the war he started in 2022. For instance, Moscow continues to claim the right to occupy Ukrainian territories that the Russian military has been unable to capture in nearly four and a half years.
Kyiv Again Affected by Russian Attack
Meanwhile, during the night, Ukraine attacked Russia with hundreds of drones, again targeting the largest Russian online retailer. The governor of the Leningrad region around St. Petersburg, Alexander Drozdenko, wrote on Telegram that 59 drones were repelled. As a result of the attacks, a fire broke out on the premises of the online retailer Wildberries in the village of Novosaratovka. Three people were injured.
Fighting also continues in Ukraine: Several explosions were heard in Kyiv this morning. Air defense is in action to repel a Russian attack, Mayor Vitali Klitschko announced.
