Mexican goalkeeper Guillermo 'Memo' Ochoa, 41, announced his retirement from professional football on Tuesday, July 21, 2026, following his record-tying sixth World Cup appearance. Ochoa shares the record of six World Cup selections with Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi, though he only played briefly in the 2026 tournament, entering as a substitute in the 78th minute of Mexico's final group stage match against the Czech Republic at the Azteca Stadium. The Guadalajara native, who debuted for Mexico in 2005, earned 154 caps for 'El Tri'. He is best remembered for his spectacular performances in the 2014 World Cup against Brazil (0-0 draw) and the 2018 World Cup against Germany (1-0 win). His career spanned nine clubs across seven countries, including stints in France (Ajaccio), Spain, Belgium, Italy, Portugal, and Cyprus (AEL Limassol).

Mexican goalkeeper Guillermo "Memo" Ochoa, 41, announced on Tuesday the end of his professional football career. Ochoa had just participated in his sixth World Cup, a record he shares with Portugal's Cristiano Ronaldo and Argentina's Lionel Messi.
Unlike Ronaldo and Messi, who played in all their national team matches during the June–July World Cup, Ochoa made only a brief appearance. He came on in the 78th minute of Mexico's final group stage match against the Czech Republic (2-0) at the Azteca Stadium in Mexico City — a game with no stakes, as Mexico had already qualified.
Ochoa had also been selected for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa but did not play any matches in that tournament. He ends his international career with 154 caps for "El Tri."
Two Grandiose Matches Against Brazil and Germany
"I gave everything, for my clubs and the national team, and today I hand in my gloves," Ochoa said in a social media message, closing a career that spanned nine clubs and seven countries.
A native of Guadalajara, Ochoa became an international in 2005. He began his club career in Mexico in 2004 and later played for Cypriot club AEL Limassol, as well as clubs in France (Ajaccio), Spain, Belgium, Italy, and Portugal.
Renowned for his solidity on the line and lightning-fast reflex saves, Ochoa rose to fame during the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, where he delivered a memorable performance against the host nation in a 0-0 group stage draw. In 2018, he further cemented his legend with another standout display as Mexico defeated Germany 1-0.
