Meta is reportedly in negotiations to lease computing power to AI startup Anthropic in a deal valued at up to $10 billion over two years, according to the New York Times. The arrangement would allow Anthropic to rent Meta's excess data center infrastructure rather than build its own facilities, with monthly payments and an early-exit clause for either party. The deal is smaller than Anthropic's $45 billion agreement with SpaceX in May. The talks are in early stages and could collapse. For Meta, the deal would generate new revenue and ease investor concerns over its massive $145 billion AI infrastructure budget, which has led to overbuilding. Meta has admitted it may have more data centers than its AI products currently require. The growing scarcity of compute has pushed rivals toward cooperation, as Anthropic prepares for an IPO and Meta already rents capacity from CoreWeave and Nebius.
