Zanzibar president: India shows investing in knowledge is investing in future

Zanzibar President Hussein Ali Mwinyi, speaking at the 63rd convocation of IIT-Madras in Chennai on July 17, 2026, praised India's commitment to knowledge investment as a model for national development. He highlighted the partnership between Zanzibar and IIT-Madras, noting that the IITM-Zanzibar campus has become a hub for global higher education in East Africa with 130 students from Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, Ethiopia, Zambia, and India. During the ceremony, 3,518 degrees were awarded to 3,106 graduates. Ashwin Subramanian Murugan received the President of India prize and the Bharat Ratna M. Visvesvaraya Memorial Prize. The event featured the Tanzanian national anthem, Tamil Nadu's state song, and Indian national songs, underscoring the bilateral cultural ties.
