The couple, who were living in Germany, were members of the Islamic State jihadist militia. The court found them guilty of enslaving and raping two Yazidi girls, among other charges including war crimes, genocide, and crimes against humanity. The trial lasted over a year, with the Federal Public Prosecutor's Office describing the violence as 'monstrous' and aimed at destroying the Yazidi faith. In a genocide trial, the Munich Higher Regional Court sentenced a man from Iraq to life imprisonment on Monday. His former partner received a juvenile sentence of nine and a half years. The court considered it proven that the defendants, who were last living in Germany, as members of the jihadist militia Islamic State, had enslaved and raped two Yazidi girls.
"I am sorry," said the 30-year-old defendant. Her also accused husband, on the other hand, stated: "I don't want to say anything."
The trial in Munich lasted more than a year. The Federal Public Prosecutor's Office accused the couple of, among other things, war crimes, genocide, and crimes against humanity, as well as severe sexual abuse of children or aiding and abetting it. "The monstrous violence is so far removed from any humanity that it seems unreal," the representative of the Attorney General had stated. Everything served the IS's goal of destroying the Yazidi faith.
