The site features a prominent statue of Jesus Christ and serves as a major pilgrimage destination for up to 40,000 people annually. While the government argues the land is critical for securing a high-traffic smuggling route and has offered $183,000 in compensation, the Diocese contends that the seizure violates First Amendment rights to religious expression and would irreparably damage the site's sanctity.
