Sweden Warns of Potential Russian Seizure of Baltic Island to Test NATO

Swedish authorities have warned Denmark that Russia may attempt to temporarily seize a Baltic island to test NATO’s resolve, cohesion, and response speed. This scenario represents a hybrid provocation rather than a full-scale conflict, aiming to exploit political and psychological vulnerabilities within the Alliance. While Danish intelligence identifies the Baltic Sea as the region with the highest probability of Russian military action against NATO members, Danish Chief of Defence General Michael Huldgaard stated there is no evidence of concrete plans for such an operation. The warnings coincide with ongoing Danish-Polish 'Baltic Shield' exercises on Bornholm and recent incidents involving drone sightings near critical infrastructure. Swedish Chief of Defence Michael Claesson emphasized that while direct conventional war remains unlikely due to NATO's superiority, Moscow may employ gradual escalation through hybrid tactics. These actions, potentially involving 'shadow fleet' vessels or sabotage, carry a high risk of miscalculation and uncontrolled escalation.
