US Senators Urge Department of War to Invest in Domestic Lithium Supply

Senators Tom Cotton, John Boozman, and Ted Cruz have sent a letter to the Department of War’s Office of Strategic Capital, urging investment in domestic lithium supply chains. The lawmakers specifically highlight the Smackover Formation, a massive lithium brine deposit stretching from Central Texas to the Florida Panhandle, as a critical resource for national security. They argue that developing this untapped reserve would significantly reduce American dependence on foreign-controlled sources, particularly China, which currently dominates the global lithium market. Lithium is identified as essential for manufacturing munitions and advanced weapons systems, including Tomahawk and Hellfire missiles. The senators request that the Pentagon prioritize the Smackover project using Defense Production Act authorities and other financing mechanisms. Additionally, they seek clarification on investment criteria and legislative needs by May 25. This initiative aligns with recent statements from EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin and Interior Secretary Doug Burgum, who emphasized domestic lithium production as a strategic economic and security priority. Senator Cotton described the current reliance on Chinese supply chains as an unacceptable vulnerability, framing domestic extraction as a necessary step to detangle the US defense industry from communist influence.
