Rudi Garcia Justifies Absences of Key Players from Belgium's 2026 World Cup Squad

Belgian national team coach Rudi Garcia announced his 26-player squad for the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup, hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada. The selection involved difficult decisions, resulting in the exclusion of notable players such as Matz Sels, Lois Openda, Mika Godts, Nathan De Cat, and Hugo Cuypers. Garcia explained that Openda was omitted due to a lack of playing time at Juventus and tactical concerns regarding pace alongside Romelu Lukaku. Despite Mika Godts' strong statistical performance in the Dutch championship, he was left out because Garcia prefers Leandro Trossard and Jeremy Doku for the left attacking positions. Young talent Mike Penders was also excluded to remain with the U21 squad. Garcia emphasized that while some excluded players were part of the preliminary list and performed well in March, final choices prioritized current form and tactical balance.
