Pope Leo XIV has appointed American Archbishop Michael Wallace Banach, 63, as the new Apostolic Nuncio to Argentina. The announcement was made simultaneously in Rome and Buenos Aires by the Apostolic Nunciature. Banach, who holds a doctorate in Canon Law and entered the Vatican diplomatic service in 1994, replaces Polish Archbishop Miroslaw Adamczyk, who was transferred to Albania in January. Born in Worcester, United States, Banach previously served as the apostolic nuncio in Hungary since 2022, following postings in Bolivia, Nigeria, and Vienna, where he worked with international organizations including the IAEA. He is fluent in English, French, Italian, Polish, and Spanish. This appointment occurs during a period of significant internal reconfiguration within the Argentine Catholic Church, which is navigating its relationship with President Javier Milei’s government amidst critical social conditions. Archbishop Marcelo Colombo, president of the Argentine Episcopal Conference, has emphasized the need for strengthened dialogue with the executive branch.
