OSCE Invokes Moscow Mechanism to Investigate Russia's Militarization of Ukrainian Children

More than 40 participating states of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) have officially invoked the Moscow Mechanism to investigate allegations regarding Russia’s indoctrination and militarization of Ukrainian children. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha announced this significant diplomatic move, expressing gratitude to the 41 states supporting the initiative. He emphasized that Russia is not only abducting children but also attempting to erase their national identity and turn them against Ukraine. This action follows a high-level meeting of the International Coalition for the Return of Ukrainian Children in Brussels on May 11, which aimed to develop practical steps for repatriating abducted children and ensuring justice. The Moscow Mechanism, established under the 1991 Moscow Document, allows a group of at least ten OSCE states to appoint independent experts to examine serious human rights violations. These experts are tasked with establishing facts, preparing a detailed report, and offering recommendations. This development coincides with recent European Union sanctions imposed on individuals and entities involved in the unlawful deportation of Ukrainian children, highlighting continued international efforts to hold Russian authorities accountable for these actions.
