Microsoft to invest $60 million in Energy Department's Genesis Mission for AI-driven science
Microsoft is investing $60 million into the Department of Energy's (DOE) Genesis Mission, which aims to accelerate scientific discovery and technological leadership through artificial intelligence. The investment includes $40 million in Azure cloud and AI computing credits over three years to support large-scale AI and scientific workloads, and $20 million to help translate cloud and AI capacity into scientific outcomes. Microsoft will also support the new SPARK coordination hub for scientific discovery, with initial projects at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (critical minerals), Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (biosecurity), Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (autonomous labs for materials discovery), and Idaho National Laboratory (nuclear energy permitting and autonomous operations). The Genesis Mission involves partnerships with major tech companies, academic institutions, and AI startups including OpenAI, Anthropic, Google DeepMind, and Nvidia, pooling expertise and computing power across DOE's 17 National Laboratories and 40,000 scientists. Energy Secretary Chris Wright stated the mission will ensure US global leadership in AI amid concerns about competition with China.
