Lawmakers Introduce MISSION RX Act to Lower Drug Costs for Veterans and Service Members

Two Democratic congressmen, Eugene Vindman and Pat Ryan, are introducing the MISSION RX Act to reduce prescription drug costs for millions of U.S. service members, veterans, and military families. The legislation aims to allow Tricare beneficiaries and Department of Veterans Affairs patients to pay the lowest government-negotiated price for medications. Specifically, patients would pay whichever is lower: the rate negotiated by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) or the cost provided through their existing coverage. Currently, only Medicare enrollees benefit from CMS-negotiated rates established under the 2022 Inflation Reduction Act. The bill seeks to correct this disparity, ensuring military families access the same savings as other Americans. While the proposal has garnered support from major veterans' organizations like the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Marine Corps League, its passage faces uncertainty in the House of Representatives, where Republicans hold a slim majority. The lawmakers argue that forcing military families to pay higher prices for essential medication is unacceptable given their sacrifices. If enacted, the bill could further boost taxpayer savings beyond the estimated $6 billion annually already projected from existing Medicare drug price negotiations.
