Lawmakers Introduce Bill to Lower Drug Costs for Service Members and Veterans

Two Democratic congressmen, Eugene Vindman and Pat Ryan, are introducing the MISSION RX Act to reduce prescription drug costs for millions of U.S. service members, veterans, and military families. The legislation aims to allow Tricare beneficiaries and Department of Veterans Affairs patients to pay the lowest government-negotiated price for medications. Specifically, patients would pay whichever is lower: the rate negotiated by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) or the cost provided through their existing coverage. Currently, only Medicare enrollees benefit from CMS-negotiated rates established under the 2022 Inflation Reduction Act. The lawmakers argue that military families should not face higher costs than other Americans for the same medications. While the bill has garnered support from major veteran organizations like the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Marine Corps League, its passage remains uncertain due to the Republican majority in the House of Representatives. Proponents estimate that extending these savings could significantly benefit taxpayers, building on the projected $6 billion annual savings from existing Medicare measures. This initiative highlights ongoing efforts to address healthcare affordability for those who have served in the U.S. military.
