Iran Holds Mass Rally for National Team Ahead of 2026 World Cup

Thousands of supporters gathered at Enghelab Square in Tehran to demonstrate national backing for Iran’s football team before their departure for the FIFA World Cup 2026. The rally, held one week prior to the team's scheduled travel, featured fans chanting slogans and praying for the squad's success. During the event, players met with President Masoud Pezeshkian, presenting him with a jersey numbered 12 to symbolize the fans as the '12th player.' President Pezeshkian urged the athletes to compete with determination and serve as symbols of national unity and pride. Support was also voiced by the head of the Revolutionary Guards’ aerospace division, emphasizing nationwide solidarity. Despite ongoing concerns regarding the team's ability to enter the United States for the tournament, the Iranian Football Federation has confirmed its participation. Iran is set to play its opening match against New Zealand on June 15 in Los Angeles. The event underscores the significant cultural role of football in Iran, highlighting widespread public enthusiasm and optimism for a strong performance on the global stage amidst joint hosting duties by the US, Canada, and Mexico.
